The Best Things to Do for Free with Kids in Dorset

Dorset is a wonderful place to visit with kids, as there are so many fun and educational activities to enjoy that won't break the bank. Here are some of the best free things to do with kids on your next Dorset family holiday.

Visit the Jurassic Coast

No visit to Dorset would be complete without visiting The Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site that stretches for 95 miles. It's a great place to explore with kids, as it offers the opportunity to see fossils, learn about the history of the area, and enjoy stunning scenery, all while breathing in the beautiful sea air.

Portland Bill Lighthouse

The lighthouse on Portland Bill is an iconic Dorset landmark that offers stunning views of the Jurassic Coast, while still playing a key part in allowing ships to pass safely. There are various interactive displays located within the lighthouse, including one which mimics a stormy trip at sea.

Corfe Castle

A National Trust property that is free to enter for members and offers a range of family-friendly activities, Corfe Castle dates back to the 11th century, offering a historic insight into Dorset. You may also be lucky enough to see some of the wildlife that calls the castle home, including red kits, buzzards and ravens – with some locals stating the castle will crumble if the ravens ever leave!

Poole Park

Poole Park is home to over 110 acres of parkland that is perfect for kids to be kids, and they’ll be sure to enjoy playing in the two large play parks that are located within, while you’ll also want to keep your eyes peeled to spot the racing yachts in the park – a daily tradition which dates back to the 1890s.

If the weather lets you down, there is an indoor play area (although this does require payment upon entry).

Explore Silverlake

If you want to stay closer to home but still fancy exploring, there is plenty to see and do on-site at Silverlake. You can use our map to find your way around the Estate and be sure to note the range of wildlife you spot.

There is a range of free activities you can enjoy on-site, including fishing, tennis and swimming. For the little ones, be sure to explore The Island, our woodland area that is perfect for those young adventurers. You can find our full choice of activities available at Silverlake here.

Go to the beach

Dorset’s famous and beautiful beaches offer the perfect opportunity for children to build sandcastles, paddle in the sea, and go rock pooling. You can find our pick of the beaches in our guide here.

Visit Durlston Country Park and National Nature Reserve

Durlston Country Park and National Nature Reserve offer plenty of space to roam as a family, with four walking trails which start and finish at the Castle, where you can pick up a Trail Pack to help you explore. You can even bring along your four-legged friend, as dogs are welcome, so long as they stay on a lead or under very close control.

Dorset has a lot to offer families with young children, and these free attractions are a great way to explore the county without costing the world. And if you’re looking to book your next trip to Dorset, why not take a look at our available properties?
